Out and About in Falmouth

Sea, gardens...and oysters!

The Falmouth Hotel overlooks in part, Falmouth’s natural harbour which is the largest deep-water harbour in Europe and third deepest in the world.  Traditional gateway to the Atlantic and one of the world’s great sailing harbours, Falmouth port was home to the Packet Ships, the fascinating history of which can be delved into at the National Maritime Museum.  Today, Falmouth is still a cargo port and has a thriving mini industry, building super luxury yachts for the rich and famous.  The port is also popular as a port of call for cruise ships.

Falmouth has plenty of reasons to celebrate its history and three annual eventsdefinitely not to be missed are the Fal River Festival in May, the Henri Lloyd Regatta week in July and the Falmouth Oyster Festival in October.

Falmouth’s shopping streets - just an easy stroll from The Falmouth Hotel -  lie just off the waterfront and are connected by small open ways that link the harbour with shops and art galleries. Cafés and restaurants offer a selection of both world and local cuisine. The Falmouth is also within walking distance of sandy beaches with clear water, safe bathing and any number of water sports.

Sightseeing in Falmouth could not be easier. Climb aboard one of the many trip boats and ferries that ply the local waters, or hop-on and off the summer road train that links the town, beaches and Pendennis Castle.  Enjoy a spot of golf, stroll around some of Cornwall’s greatest gardens or just go walkabout and discover some of the history of this little resort town.  Enjoy the best of both worlds and use The Falmouth Hotel as a base to explore the Lizard Peninsula, take in a play at the Minnack Theatre or seek out the neolithic and bronze age monuments of mystical west Cornwall.
